How To Create a SATA RAID Volume With Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU (Intel® VROC) in UEFI Mode on Intel® Server Systems
Environment
Intel® Server Systems
Description
The drives are not showing up in the BIOS after selecting the RAID type, and the option to create the RAID is not there either.
Resolution
To set the BIOS in UEFI mode, follow the steps below:
- Go to the BIOS. It can be launched by pressing the key F2 during the Power-On Self-Test (POST).
- Navigate to Boot maintenance manager > Advanced boot options.
- Set the system to UEFI mode.
- Press the key F10 to save the changes and exit.
To create the RAID volume, follow the steps below:
Press the key F2 to enter BIOS.
Navigate to Advanced > Mass storage controller configuration.
Select the desired controller.
Set the option AHCI Capable (s)SATA Controller to RAID Mode.
Set the option (s)SATA RAID Options to Intel® VROC (SATA RAID). You may see Intel® RSTe instead of Intel® VROC (SATA) on older version of BIOS on Intel® Server Products. See Intel® Rapid Storage Technology enterprise (Intel® RSTe) Name Change for BIOS and Firmware on Intel® Server Board S2600WF, S2600BP and S2600ST Families for further details
Press the key F10 to save the changes and exit.
Boot to the BIOS once again.
Navigate to Advanced > PCI Configuration > UEFI Option ROM Control.
Scroll to the very bottom and select the option Intel® VROC SATA Controller. Depending on the system configuration, you may also see the option Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU. Do not select this option as this is for Intel® VROC (VMD NVMe* RAID).

Select the option Create RAID Volume.
Configure the RAID volume as desired.
Select the option Create Volume.
Additional information
For supported Linux* distributions and versions, no manual driver installation is required as the driver is included in the operating system image.
For supported Windows* OS, follow the below steps to install the Intel® VROC (SATA RAID) driver:
- Download the Intel® VROC driver for Windows* for your Intel® Server Products from Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU (Intel® VROC) and Intel® Rapid Storage Technology Enterprise (Intel® RSTe) Windows* Driver for Intel® Server Boards and Systems Based on Intel® 62X Chipset.
- Unzip the ZIP (compressed) file.
- Go to the F6-drivers in the extracted folder and copy the files under iaStorE.free.win8.64bit to a USB drive. See more information in Which Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU (Intel® VROC) Driver Use During Windows* Setup/Installation.
- Insert the USB drive with the drivers.
- In the screen where the partition needs to be selected, click the option Load drivers and select the files copied on step 3.
- If the OS does not find the virtual drive/RAID volume, click the option Rescan.
- Create the partition and continue with the installation process.
